Preparing Your Personal Items For Storage
Stack your items in similar sized boxes as they will be easier to stack. Stack the heaviest boxes on the bottom.
Avoid stacking items directly against the wall. Leave some space between your items and the wall which will allow for some air flow in the unit.
Save time! Make a plan on how you want to organize and pack your unit. In order to maximize the use of your storage unit store couches on end, stack chairs seat to seat, and use larger items to store blankets, clothes, and small miscellaneous items.
Consider using pallets, boards, blocks, etc. to keep items up off the floor of the unit.
Try to leave a walkway in your unit which will make it easier for you to access all items.
Consider purchasing and using shelving units to better utilize your storage space.
Label all boxes on all sides! This will reduce your search time whenever you want to retrieve boxed items later.
When storing business files and inventory, label all boxes and construct aisles so files are easily seen and accessible.
Pack Items that you will be frequently accessing towards the front.
Disassemble large items, such as bed frames, tables, etc. This will save space and prevent them from breaking. Be sure to keep all parts together. Keep screws and smaller items handy by taping them to the larger item they belong to.
When storing appliances be sure to clean them out first! Leave the door slightly open on refrigerators and microwaves to prevent mildew. When storing washers, make sure the water is completely drained out of the machine.
Rub a small amount of oil on metal tools, bikes, etc. This will prevent rust - but be sure to separate these to not get oil on other things!
Store mirrors and paintings on end, do not lay them flat. Wrap and indicate they are fragile.
Lay blankets or other cloths over and between furniture to prevent scratching.
Use furniture drawers for delicate items and specially wrap and label them as "FRAGILE". Bubble wrap and packing paper are excellent for these purposes.
When packing toys or smaller objects, remember to fill boxes completely, stuffing open areas with plain newspaper to prevent collapsing when stacked.
Use trash cans to store shovels, hoes and rakes.
Always use a high quality lock on your unit. Locks are available at the Rental Office.
When storing delicate heirlooms, use specially constructed boxes, such as wardrobe boxes, and utilize dehumidifier packs to prevent mildew build up.
Remember to label these boxes "FRAGILE"
Mattresses should be covered and stored flat on level surfaces.
Use protective covers and treat wood surfaces before storing.
